Our Randolph project demonstrates how a kitchen that nods to tradition can always find a truly contemporary expression. The skill is to combine recognisable archetypes – here represented in the furniture by a simple bead detail and paint finish, alongside other traditional elements in contemporary form: a terrazzo surface, bracketed wood shelves, brass hardware, herringbone wood floors, a range cooker … . All the elements that make this kitchen function are, importantly, attuned to contemporary convenience – including a boiling water tap, wine fridge, induction surface, etc … .

There’s no enduring joy to be had in a kitchen that looks set in its ways and out of its time, or that requires the work or the workarounds required to crank it into the action of ‘once upon a time’. Clever design knows how to combine tradition with modernity to create a space that fits perfectly in its surroundings, avoids the trappings of ‘pastiche’, and feels comfortably adjusted for contemporary life.
