DAY Handleless Kitchen | Bianca Marble Worktop | Bespoke Wardrobes

For this Edwardian, end of terrace house in North London – with a puppy taking up residence with its newly acquired family – everything was up for renewal as part of an architectural project to extend the ground floor and reconfigure the central staircase and loft areas.
Our brief included the kitchen, cloakroom, main bathroom, loft bathroom, and principal bedroom with ensuite shower.
Geometry plays a key element throughout. In the kitchen, triangular light fittings hang in parallel lines to provide decorative spot lighting above the island, and an opalescent globe light complements rectangular wall sconces and shifts the mood over the dining table with its soft shape and diffused light.
The furniture mixes blocks with elongated panels, the perpendicular with the horizontal, and smooth curves with sharp lines.
A simple, handleless, uncluttered kitchen is formed from blocks of pure white with elegant French Grey/Sage Green contrasts – the latter emphasising height along one side of the kitchen and cutting a swathe across the back wall.
Seating has been carefully chosen to harmonise with the shapes and tones found elsewhere in the room, and to help differentiate formalised dining from more casual gatherings.
A vintage dining suite combines traditional curves with modernist angles that work equally to complement and subvert the pared-back modernity of the rest of the room.

Plenty of room is available for a generously inviting sofa – specified as part of the kitchen furnishings – a perfect space for curling up and reading or writing with a view to the garden, with or without a companionable puppy resting by your side.

The styling of the white base units, with no decorative visual distractions, is mirrored by a run of high gloss white subway tiles – giving a textured wall finish that veers towards the ‘clean’ rather than the ‘clinical’.

Kitchen Details

Ground Floor: Cloakroom
The cloakroom features a compact washbasin, patterned floor tiles, and a simple, elegant, classic silver, grey and white colour palette.

The Backbone of the House
A striped and edge-bound stair carpet transitions the old painted stairway to the newly created natural wood landing and beyond.

Loft Bedroom and Bathroom
A loft shower space echoes some of the same triangular styling found in the kitchen, and features a grey oak, wood-effect ceramic tile – laid horizontally in the shower, and lengthways across the floor.

Main (Family) Bathroom
This large bathroom accommodates a free-standing bath, walk in shower, mirrored wall cabinet, carefully placed controls, design-forward towel rail, and some ‘Edwardian-on-steroids’ styling for the floor tiles. Shapes are a mix of the square and the round.

Main Bedroom with Ensuite Bathroom
Bespoke Wardrobes sit opposite an Ensuite Shower Room. Just seen, in the bathroom above the basin, is a bespoke mirror with a chic set of ‘mirror-mounted’ taps.

Library Corners
Books play an important role in this project. Cook books are easily accessed in the kitchen, reading and reference in the living area and, in the highest room in the house, self-expression is key to their styling.
