This project involved a whole house renovation designed for family use and with practicality a fundamental requirement. Traditional craft and noble materials combine with contemporary style and technology to maintain the property’s architectural heritage while keeping a sure grip on the present and a weather eye on the future.

The bespoke kitchen forms the public facing centre of the home, designed for cooking and entertaining as much as for spending downtime in this cool, calm, elegantly imagined domestic space.

The centrepiece island, clad in beautifully veined Carrara marble, is enhanced by a fine brass inlaid edge. A ‘waterfall’ style finish to the countertop – viewable from the entrance –adds to the glamorous first impression of the room.

Counter seating opposite the hob creates a sociable cooking environment – the stools chosen for their comfort and the quality of their materials – including walnut frames to match the internals of the furniture, and a brushed brass banding that supports the A-frame structure and serves as a relaxing foot-rest.

Colour and material choices across the room – including the chevroned wood floor, paint finishes, and full-length silk curtains – are anchored in shades of grey, blue, beige and white – creating a classically stylish mix of colours, textures and tones that help harmonise the ancient and the modern.

Across from the island, a microcement countertop brings an industrial edge to the material choices without detracting from the soft elegance of the room and matching the subtle industrial stylings of the traditionally crafted furniture.

A Bora downdraft hob enables the cooking surface to remain as discrete as it is efficient: its high-tech extraction system means that grease and cooking smells stay contained and/or managed within its easy to clean, concealed working internals.

Open shelves extend above one side of the back run to enable visible access to what might be usefully or beautifully displayed; the opposite side of the counter top is left free for artwork and other objects.

In the ensuite bathing/dressing area adjoining the Principal bedroom, REXA’s ‘Soave’, oversized wine-glass shaped basin complements the profile of the bath. It sits above the vanity unit where bathroom essentials can be stored away neatly.

Made-to-measure wardrobes with smoked glass doors provide a discretely veiled and practical dressing space opposite a full width wall-mounted mirror.

Kitchen

The tall units house ovens, refrigeration, and storage. A pantry cupboard opens to reveal walnut internal accessories and a marble surface – providing counter space for the toaster and a coffee maker.

A sympathetically designed low profile bookshelf acts as a display area for books that double as artwork.

Family Bathroom

A smaller bathroom, for the use of the youngest member of the family, is designed for longevity, with shelving added to create a feature wall capable of growing with its inhabitant and adding fun to its functionality. A structural beam has been left deliberately ‘undisguised’ as a colourfully contrasting reminder of the sculpture of the architecture.
