The brief for this bijou Wimbledon Village apartment included an evocation of the spirit of Haussmann – the architect of a Parisian style that endures in imaginings of the City of Light that was also a style reference for our client.
With its high ceilings, generous sash windows, decorative mouldings, and other original period features, the groundwork was in place for adding chicly chevroned wooden flooring, and the cabinetry, finishes, lighting and accessories that bring an old world idea of restrained glamour to contemporary life.
A compact island is clad in a porcelain stone surface and finished with ‘waterfall’ edges that run from countertop to floor. The surface design covers every edge of the stone to give a ‘4D’ effect – so you can follow the markings from back to front, top to bottom, and across the edge profiles of the sink.
On the opposite side of the room, a bespoke fireplace with mantlepiece and antiqued mirror glass, with matching light fittings and the same stone surface as the kitchen, brings a sense of coherence and adds increased depth to the space as a whole.
Kitchen

Storage space in a compact kitchen is required to be ‘dedicated’ to its cause. Seen here, a mini breakfast pantry, featuring an extendable pair of shelves where the coffee machine, milk frothing ‘kettle’, and a toaster get to hang out with their supplies – ready to move into action, or to be stowed away discretely – as and when required.

A ‘Baby’ Bora (S Pure) downdraft hob provides a perfect compact cooking space and avoids the need for an extractor hood that would encourage grease and smells to rise and contaminate the space above.
A perfect solution when counter space is limited – this 60cm entry-level option may be small in its dimensions, but don’t underestimate its power or its pedigree. Every bit as efficient as its bigger Bora siblings, it also has its own special skill in managing the smaller pots and pans that the others sometimes struggle with, and it can be programmed to brew coffee all by itself, in traditional Italian style, at the simple touch of a button.

The ‘Strong White’ coloured kitchen units feature an elegant beading detail that frames each door.
Handles, knobs and T-bars were chosen for their lustrous appeal and to match the proportions of the cabinets they serve.

A fluted oak panel on the open side of the island provides a contrasting finish to mark the more sociable side of the kitchen, and to help delineate the living space from one dedicated to cooking.

A hall of mirrors – featuring seductively smoky glass – maximises a feeling of space, and amps up a sense of intrigue as to where the entrances and exits are leading?
Cloakroom and Shower Room
Ethereal, concealed entrances give access to two compact intimate spaces.
A tiny cloakroom houses a tall hammam washbasin on a low slung porcelain shelf. ‘Eat Me, Drink Me’, Alice in Wonderland proportions create a playful disproportionality in how space can be experienced, beyond the limitations of actual height, breadth and depth.

Bespoke showerglass, framed in matt black, outlines the shower and contrasts with gold-toned brass fittings.

Some Details

In a Looking Glass World
The original fireplace is complemented by a beading detail that gives the look of panelling. Lighting choices reflect and complement the feature pendant and wall lights of the kitchen, and a bespoke overmantle Louis Philipe style mirror reflects light and balances the two sides of the room.
