Our final visit to our Huf Haus renovation this we Our final visit to our Huf Haus renovation this week lands us in the kitchen. As for the rest of the house, the space was already delineated for its function, and marked out by a symbolic threshold where wood floor meets tile and where light-filled, high-ceilinged living space separates from the dropped height and diffused light sources allocated to the kitchen. The dark tonality of the furniture adds to the sense of depth and separation of this space, while using a smoky natural wood finish allows the tonality to transition as light moves across its surfaces. From a bathroom designed predominantly for ‘her’, From a bathroom designed predominantly for ‘her’, we move to one with a more masculine frame, demonstrating subtle differences beyond 'his' v 'hers' stylings that demarcate possibilities for use. T’his’ bathroom is located in the principal ensuite, so twin vanities have been added, and a full length mirror fronts a sleekly recessed storage cupboard – indicating use as an individualised dressing area and for getting ready in tandem for the start or end of the day. Tiles that mimic the tonality, if not the rough tactility, of concrete – as for the bathroom next door – cover the floor and the wall adjacent to the shower and the WC – and a neatly created niche provides a handy space for storing a posh bottle of post poo drops, or whatever else might be useful to have at hand for what might once have been referred to as a ‘privy’ place. Taps, towel rails and shower heads once again match the architecture of the house, and a reeded oak finish to the drawer fronts below the basins provides a stylistically familiar flourish to echo the elongated mosaic tiles featured in the room next door. Twin mirrors pivot from the ceiling in parallel with the windows and the basins – scroll through to the end to see how design ideas might equally pivot from original imaginings and drawings to final choices. The oval option would have provided a softening contrast, but the bold square frames of the final choice play “now-you-see-me, now-you-don’t” games with the matching window frames – and whoever happens to be in front of the looking glass. Inspired by Oscar nominated film ‘The Brutalist’ w Inspired by Oscar nominated film ‘The Brutalist’ with its link to modernist architecture, we’re throwing some distinctly angular shapes in our notes and images for this week’s featured project – a Surrey based Huf Haus, for which we were tasked to redesign the kitchen, cloakroom, utility and ‘his’ and ‘hers’ bathrooms. Modernist principles famously require that form should follow function – with each space broadly imagined as a ‘machine for living’ as a first priority. Our brief required us to upgrade function and form for the interior of this house to better suit the lives of its current owners – a couple of stylishly relevant media stars. The bathroom pictured is ‘for her’. Its striking, sharply geometrically defined outline – brutally fit for purpose if previously lacking in more emotionally responsive angles – now given a softer edge with the addition of large format, matt-finish porcelain tiles for the floor and walls – carefully and cleverly grouted to give the look and feel of a ‘sueded’ cement finish and smoothing the effect of its spare architectural integrity on the eyes and on the skin. Elongated mosaic tiling is added as a textural and visually linking detailed backdrop for bath and basin and as finish for the interior of a full width niche – ideally placed to serve the pampering needs of a bather, no matter which end of the bath they favour. A fluted vanity unit mirrors the mosaic tiling, while a mirrored storage cabinet is complemented with bespoke fitted mirrors cut to fit exactly into the space available to them – creating a generous reflective surface for both spaces and faces. Finally, a moulded ‘stone’ bath – with its geometric styling and taperingly slim walls – fits the space as easily as it does the curves of a human form. The finished result is of a luxurious feeling personal space that fits comfortably inside the simple matt black frame of its shower screens, brassware and windows to maintain a close relationship with its contemporary, pared-back, and sustainably imagined architecture. @rexadesign #bathroom #bathroomdesign #bathroomrenovation #hufhaus #hufhouse #wimbledonvillage #thebrutalist
Like all good parties, we’re finishing this one ba Like all good parties, we’re finishing this one back in the kitchen. For a simply imagined design, there’s a lot of detail to miss at first glance. The neutral, daylight colour palette and plain door fronts are enhanced by brass fittings that both reference traditional features and, if you look closely, add movement using a carefully choreographed mix of modernity – in the shape of T-bars, knobs, handles and textures. The striking Calacatta Viola marble, moving in deep burgundy waves from the immediately visible areas of sink surround and central island, to the reveal of the inside of a pantry cupboard, emphasises luxurious finishings amid the restraint and, finally, a simple run of open shelves accommodates an idea of the personal – the things we choose to put on display. Scroll through to the very end to see how this historic Grand Lady of a building sits in balance with its neighbours from differing eras – an example of how modernity, history, and traditions of creativity in a designed and built environment co-exist together in a harmonious whole. Before we say a final goodbye to the full tour of Before we say a final goodbye to the full tour of this apartment renovation, a quick view of the cool, calm living space. The symmetricality of the windows divides this room neatly into equal spaced zones for dining and lounging, while the repetition of the light fittings – suspended from matching ceiling roses – together with marble shelves that bookend the space – used as a bar on the dining side, and for a low shelf running in parallel with the panelling in the sitting area – elongate the feel of the room and contribute to the ease with which one zone completes the other A whole apartment renovation, where a designer is given scope to be creative within each room while keeping the place fully coherent, is a challenge we particularly enjoy. From the doorway of the principal bedroom we move From the doorway of the principal bedroom we move into the ensuite, where twin vanity units support matching ‘Soave’ wine-glass shaped bowls that, in turn, are sited under an oversized circular mirror. Decorative twin globe light fixtures stand sentry either side and give off softly-rounded opalescent light. As we venture further into this unusually generous ensuite space, we start to get a sense of its scale – starting with the height of the ceiling, and further emphasised by the depth of the basins on their dropped supporting structures and the size of the platform on which the wet-room area is designed. The basins, like the bath, are moulded from matching mineral-rich ‘Korakril’ – a soft-to-the-touch stone that adds to the sense of a space that successfully combines safe cocooning ‘feels’ with voluminous opulence. The split levels of the room – where the entrance space segues to the wet area and where the bathing area invisibly separates from the showering space – allow for the wet area’s platform to easily incorporate a fully open rain shower while keeping its controls safely out of the danger zone of getting wet when turning on the taps, and for the towels to remain warm, dry and ready for service from bath or shower. Finally, the fluted textured ceramic wall finish in the wet area features a backlit panel that emphasises the depth of the room and underlines its backbone of tactility, and a large window, glazed with reeded glass to obscure the view – out or in – neatly echoes the ceramic ridges of the wall treatment. As added bonus, the window-ledge presents an ideal opportunity for placing taps, water spout and shower attachment, and keeps the controls for the bath neatly positioned at a perfect height. Bespoke wardrobes were fitted in all three bedroom Bespoke wardrobes were fitted in all three bedrooms in this apartment, each individually designed to suit the needs and aspects of the room. Period details – panelling and cornicing – require a sensitive touch: surroundings were kept simple to enhance the delicacy inherent in these decorative original stylings. Pictured first in this carousel of images is the second bedroom, sited at the top end of the hall, and fitted with a full width headboard concealing halo-effect lighting. As you swipe through to take a turn around the room, look out for the full-length mirror, positioned to take full advantage of a cut corner – giving a view into a looking glass world beyond. Nearer the front door, and pictured next in our sequence, is a third bedroom: designed to be put to use flexibly – as guest bedroom, home gym, or additional private space for work or leisure pursuits. Smoked glass wardrobes and open shelves provide visibly organised storage space. Finally, we arrive at the principal bedroom leading onto an ensuite bathroom. The panelling here provides an intricate backdrop, the bay window a focal point, and a marble vanity – just in view, adjacent to the window and the wardrobes – a quiet space benefiting from daylight. Two new bathrooms are found at the far end of the Two new bathrooms are found at the far end of the hallway. These had to be imaginatively created by working within some complicated restrictions and by borrowing an idea of volume from wherever it could be found – whether that be physical or impressionistic. First in these images, is a shower room with a generous window on one side and where a narrow washbasin poses on the other like a monumental piece, by dint of its depth and apparent heft. The basin is more than generous enough for a soap dispensing bottle to sit semi-concealed inside but, deceptively, is also not quite as deep as it seems from its outside dimensions. Wall-mounted taps provide a solution for keeping the fixtures and fittings close to the wall. A second shower-room sits as a non-identical twin next door. As the only windowless room in the apartment, it has been given a different treatment and uses a bespoke, oversized mirror to reflect the room back on itself, giving the feeling that it adds up to more than the sum of its floorspace. Unexpected proportions are also used to lead and deceive the eye as they emphasise height and depth: via a low slung vanity, set against the mirror surface and supporting a tall, narrow, Hammam-style basin, and with the placement of a recessed, elongated, dark-toned focal-point wall cabinet. We’re stepping into the front hall of a whole apar We’re stepping into the front hall of a whole apartment renovation in the first of our images today. This project was for a full reconfiguration of the dated interior of a grandly designed mansion flat. Our brief included the creation of an additional bathroom, to increase the flow of natural light throughout the space, and to be sympathetic to the traditional features already present while making the decor relevant for the present day. Follow the images here as we turn first to the left of the front door into the kitchen, then, a little further into the hallway, we take a right into a bedroom with a full wall of bespoke wardrobes – with period details showing intact on the ceiling and just outside the windows.
